What is BROCK DECK? A durable, maintenance-free vinyl deck plank that can be used to build a new deck or to retrofit an existing deck. BROCK DECK can also be used for walkways, stairs, docks, stages and other exposed traffic surfaces.
Are we talking about vinyl as in vinyl windows or siding? Yes, the basic formula and manufacturing process are the same. The difference is that the vinyl formula has been specially enhanced to meet the demands of a busy deck and railing. Every component is engineered specifically to maximize the benefits of a quality vinyl.
You talk about a vinyl formula. Isn’t it just plastic? Generically vinyl is a plastic. The chemical name is polyvinyl chloride or PVC for short. The natural ingredients used to make the vinyl resin are combined with chemical additives to create a rigid profile that can withstand weather extremes. And for decking a durable walk surface.
What makes BROCK DECK Systems vinyl better? BROCK DECK Systems has perfected a formula to ensure its lasting quality. The quality of the ingredients and the proportions are important. BROCK DECK Systems uses the best UV inhibitor available. We don’t use recycled materials because of the inability to consistently produce a superior quality product. We use 100% virgin vinyl and monoextrude our profiles.
What does monoextrude mean? Vinyl is extruded. That means vinyl compound is pushed through dies to form a specific shaped profile. Monoextrusion means that the extrusion is a single solid layer. Other vinyl deck manufacturers coextrude which means that there is a thin colored capstock where all the best ingredients are placed over a thicker layer of lesser quality compound. If the thin protective capstock is damaged exposing the under layer, the vinyl could become brittle and breakdown. This is especially critical on a surface where normal deck activities could scar or scrape through the colored capstock. A BROCK DECK plank’s color is throughout the piece and its surface design is resistant to damage.
How long has BROCK DECK been available? BROCK DECK was the first vinyl deck/dock plank on the market. In 1989, the planks were introduced under the Brock Dock brand name for docks and marinas. Soon they realized that it was also a superior choice for decks. The BROCK DECK Systems name was later introduced as the line grew.
What does Systems refer to? The system means that every BROCK DECK Systems component was designed to work together so your finished project not only functions well but also looks beautiful. BROCK DECK Systems also refers to the variety of installation and trim options along with 10 different railing styles.
So is a vinyl BROCK DECK Systems maintenance-free? Virtually. You don’t have to scrape, paint or stain a BROCK DECK or railing. To keep it looking like new, you simply wash it with a garden hose. The nonporous surface cleans easily and resists stains. In the rare instance that a repair is required, individual components or railing sections can be easily replaced.
What makes BROCK DECK Systems different than wood or wood composites? BROCK DECK Systems was created expressly to eliminate the problems of wood deck. Rot, rust, slivers and sharp surfaces, discoloration, dangerous chemicals and inconsistent quality are all issues with a wood deck. Wood composites (or plastic lumber) aren’t the solution either as many of the problems still exist along with new ones. Because they are a blend of sawdust and recycled plastic garbage, wood composites are very inconsistent from batch to batch. Wood composites don’t historically retain their color or structural integrity. BROCK DECK is a stable, consistent product that has been outperforming wood and wood composites for years.
This all sounds wonderful. So what are the negatives of vinyl? Vinyl has specific characteristics that through chemical formulation and proper plank design BROCK DECK Systems has been able to control. For example, vinyl naturally expands and contracts under heat and cold. A BROCK DECK takes that trait into account and uses a patented Clip-Strip® attachment system to secure planks onto the substructure allowing for the natural movement. This means a very stable walk surface without the squeaks found on competitive products.
How about safety issues with BROCK DECK Systems? Brock Deck has an excellent slip-resistant surface. It is even used for handicap ramps. Vinyl stays cool to the touch even on sunny days. BROCK DECK railing and decking materials always stays smooth and there are no dangerous nails or screws. You don’t have to worry about slivers or snagged clothing. Vinyl also has excellent fire-retardant properties. Another issue is environmental safety.
How can a plastic product be environmentally friendly? By using our natural resources wisely. Using a manufactured material that lasts (vinyl) instead of a natural one that doesn’t (wood) makes good sense. Why should we deplete our forests to build decks when we have a better option? In addition, BROCK DECK Systems reduces our dependence upon hazardous chemical treatments and cleaners. BROCK DECK is recyclable – although you won’t have to!
How is a BROCK DECK built? The substructure is constructed similar to a wood deck. BROCK DECK planks weigh about 1.1 lb. per lineal foot so a typical 16” on center joint span is all that is required. Planks are used like a wood 2x6. They measure 1-1/2” x 5-7/8” and come in comparable wood lengths. The aluminum CLIP-STRIP attachment system uses stainless steel screws. When the deck plank is snapped into place there are no exposed fasteners.
What if my current deck has an 18” on center span? The 18’ span is fine for residential applications. The 16” on center gives a slightly firmer feel when running across the deck. In fact, BROCK DECK can span up to 24” depending upon the specific application.
How are the planks spaced? The CLIP-STRIP system automatically gives you the proper 1/8” spacing between planks. On long deck surfaces where BROCK DECK plank ends are butted, double joists with 3” wide Snap-Locks are used. This allows for the vinyl’s natural expansion and contraction.
Can a homeowner install a BROCK DECK? Yes. Basic carpentry skills and standard tools are required along with a dead blow hammer. The planks can be cut and routed just like wood. We do recommend Carbine blades. A detailed installation video is available for do-it-yourselfers.
What other products are available to complete a BROCK DECK Systems project? There are color-matched trim options such as L-trim, C-trim, T-trim, caps and rim joist covers. Coordinated vinyl railing packages are also available.
What about railing? There are 10 different railing styles. BROCK DECK Systems has styles ranging from turned spindle looks to heavier 3” inch pickets. The BROCK DECK Systems vinyl railing packages use steel reinforcements for added strength. A railing needs to be able to hold up to people pushing, leaning and colliding and withstand weather extremes.
Does BROCK DECK Systems meet building code requirements? BROCK DECK Systems is the first manufacturer with system certification by the nationally recognized code body ICC-ES. ICC-ES Legacy Report NER-705 covers the deck, deck installation components and 6 specific railing styles and installation components.
What colors are available? BROCK DECK Systems is available in Alpine White, Dove Grey and Desert Tan. The colors offered are great neutrals that work well no matter the home’s architectural style and color scheme. Also, we don’t necessarily recommend white for some installations because it can be too reflective on sunny days.
Do the colors change over the years? No. BROCK DECK Systems uses more UV protection in our vinyl formula than any other vinyl deck manufacturer. They use more of this critical U.V. inhibitor to ensure the color stability than even premium vinyl siding manufacturers. In addition, BROCK DECK Systems is monoextruded so the color is consistent all the way through the component.
What does BROCK DECK cost? The deck planking system is very comparable to a quality wood. You cannot compare the quality (and therefore the price) of BROCK DECK with the common low-end deck grades. You’ve got to compare apples with apples. And you’ve got to compare the expected life of the product. A deck is an investment that adds value to a home. BROCK DECK Systems not only adds value immediate, it will improve the homeowners return on investment if the home is sold.
The BROCK DECK Systems vinyl railing will be initially higher than a simple wood railing but it often is comparable to the more ornate wood spindle styles. Again, the key is to compare quality levels first, the cost of ownership over the life of the product and the maintenance savings. You’ll find BROCK DECK Systems to be a very good value overall.
What type of warranty does BROCK DECK Systems have? The manufacturer’s warranty is a Limited Lifetime Transferable Warranty. Warranties are only as good as the company that backs them. Consumers should know that an industry pioneer manufactures BROCK DECK Systems. Royal Crown Limited is a member of the Royal Group, the largest PVC extrusion conglomerate in North American. And BROCK DECK Systems is not only the oldest vinyl deck on the market, it is the best selling vinyl deck worldwide.
Where can consumers buy BROCK DECK Systems? BROCK DECK Systems is only sold through authorized dealers worldwide.
